General of the South East Asia, South Asia, South Pacific Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs
Ambassador Nguyen Tat Thanh has been Director-General of the South East Asia, South Asia, South Pacific Department, Ministry of Foreign Affairs since January 2024, having previously held the same position from 2017-2020.
Starting at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1990, Amb. Thành had worked for, inter alia, the ministry’s Cabinet, the Department of Multilateral economic cooperation, the ASEM 2004 and APEC 2017 national secretariats.
He had been engaged in bilateral and multilateral negotiations, including the bilateral trade agreement with the US, Viet Nam’s accession to the WTO, ASEAN’s free trade agreements with partners, Viet Nam – EU Partnership and cooperation agreement (PCA) and the Comprehensive and progressive trans-Pacific partnership agreement (CPTPP). After serving as Deputy Director-General for 12 years, he became Director-General in 2013.
As a career diplomat, he had been Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Viet Nam to the Commonwealth of Australia, with accreditation to the Republic of Kiribati, the Republic of Nauru, the Independent State of Papua New Guinea, the Solomon Islands and the Republic of Vanuatu (November 2020 – December 2023); Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Viet Nam to the Kingdom of Thailand (March 2013 – June 2017) and Deputy Permanent Representative of Viet Nam to the United Nations, New York (January 2005 – January 2008).
