ACC: Please tell us about Forms Syntron Information (HK) Ltd?
AC: Shenzhen Forms Syntron Information Co., Ltd. was founded in 2003 and is listed on the Shenzhen Stock Exchange (300468.SZ), Forms Syntron specializes in servicing the banking industry, and boasts a 2,000-strong team of finance IT professionals in mainland China.
Forms Syntron Information (HK) Ltd. operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of Shenzhen Forms Syntron Information Co., Ltd. It was incorporated in 2009 and is basesd in Kwun Tong, Hong Kong. Forms Syntron Information (HK) Ltd. offers consulting, system integration and software development services. We aim to be the leading Cross-Border FinTech Thought Leader, Incubator & Enabler in the next 2 to 3 years, especially in the Greater Bay Area.
ACC: Could you share more details about the idea of Cross-Border FinTech?
AC: Yes, of course. Cross-border FinTech includes three items and they are
1. Cross-Border Thought-Leader – Mainland China is already being considered as the world leader in the FinTech industry. Hong Kong is catching up in this area. By bringing and localizing the latest innovative Fintech ideas from mainland China to Hong Kong, we can help expediting HK’s FinTech development.
2. Incubator - Build a cohesive FinTech ecosystem by incubating high potential start-ups to help them develop, grow and be able to collaborate with conventional financial institutions.
3. Enabler - We provide technologies and expertise to both conventional financial institutions and Fintech startups to help bring their ideas to come to live.
ACC: Are most of your customers located in Hong Kong?
AC: Our customers include conventional banks, financial institutions, and Fintech companies across mainland China and Hong Kong. I would say 50% of our customers are from mainland China and the other 50% from Hong Kong. By working with different traditional banks, financial institutions, and Fintech companies between mainland China and Hong Kong, we are well positioned to leverage our resources and skills to provide and deliver the best services to our customers
ACC: What is your philosophy in management?
AC: Regarding to my management philosophy, I would refer to a great quote by Richard Branson, “If you take care of your employees, they will take care of your clients.” At FORMS, we are made up of FinTech industry’s top talents. We all have common purposes and passion which motivate them to do their best for our clients. We “manage” by empowering and entrusting them. The 2 Most important leading principles to shape our company's culture are Customer Obsession and Hire and Develop the Best. Let me share more details about these two leading principles.
1. Customer Obsession - Leaders start with the customer and work backwards. They work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust. Although leaders pay attention to competitors, they obsess over customers.
2. Hire and Develop the Best - Leaders raise the performance bar with every hire and promotion. They recognize exceptional talent, and willingly move them throughout the organization. Leaders develop leaders and take seriously their role in coaching others. We work on behalf of our people to invent mechanisms for development like Career Choice.
These 2 principles + the other supporting principles are the key to drive our company forward.
ACC: How would you describe your leadership style?
AC: I would describe my leadership style as visionary, coaching, caring, empowering and entrusting. I share my vision with my team, and help them to see how they can contribute to this vision. By doing this, we will be able to move together towards our shared view of the future. Also, caring is important. As a CEO of the company, it is important to understand and concern about employees' well-being. If your employees are not happy, your customers won't be happy. Lastly, empowering and entrusting is important for our business. We are in Fintech business, we cannot micromanage and control everything our employees do. Instead we empower and entrust our employees, and give them the freedom to come up with innovative ideas or new way of doing things on their own.
ACC: What is most important to you and your organization?
AC: It would be earning the trust and respect from our clients, partners and the peers.
ACC: What are the most useful resources that you would recommend to someone looking to gain a better perspective into becoming a better leader?
AC: Look for a role model and constantly challenge yourself how to lead more effectively
ACC: What are the most lacking traits among the leaders today and What are the most important traits of successful leaders today?
AC: The most lacking trait among the leaders today is patience to listen and coach. It’s mainly due to the rapidly changing market environment and intensive business performance pressure. And the most important traits of successful leaders today would be someone who can build up strong trust and credibility with employees, partners and clients.

Alex Chan has 20 years of solid consulting and business development experience for major banks in Hong Kong, with broad and deep experience about banks' strategy, business, operations and information technology. He is currently the CEO of Forms Syntron Information (HK) Limited and the leader in driving business growth in Hong Kong.
Prior to joining Forms Syntron Information, Mr. Chan was the Executive, Banking Industry of IBM China/Hong Kong Ltd. His responsibilities included promoting FinTech, Cognitive Bank, digital banking, digital branch and mobile payment.
